Jiang Zemin At A Dead End After Xu Caihou’s Downfall
People focus on the “big Tiger” Jiang Zemin after the downfall of General Xu Caihou Commentators say that after the Wenchuan earthquake, former premier Wen Jiabao went to the site, but the army didn’t listen to him, so a valuable rescue opportunity was lost. The then military chairman was puppet-like Hu Jintao, former leader of China. The other two deputy chairmen of the army only listened to Jiang Zemin.
Hexun.com commented that Xu Caihou was only one of the “scattered monkeys from the toppled tree”. Regarding who the toppled tree is, people understand the hint.
When the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake occurred, Wen Jiaobao went to the site quickly. He stressed the importance of the rescue work. He also ordered the road to Wenchuan to be opened up at any cost. However, the army deliberately delayed, some even refused to send troops, they used excuses “weather wasn’t good enough”. Wen screamed on the phone to a general, “I don’t care, people have paid you, it’s all up to you!” then slammed the phone down.
Xu Caihou has been in charge of the army for ten years, part of a military clique. Military power was held by Jiang’s faction including Xu Caihou. Hu Jintao had no power over the military. Although Wenchuan was in adangerous situation, Wen Jiabaowasn’t strong enough to have the army dispatched.
Chen Bingde, then chief of staff of the military published an article exposing that 72 hours after the earthquake, Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao couldn’t get the army dispatched to Wenchuan, All military action had to be approved by Jiang Zemin.
Xin Ziling, former publishing director at China’s Defense University spoke to Voice of America. He said that Hu Jintao wanted to help, but Jiang Zemin was above him. Hu Jintao only had the power to give orders to a major general. Above that level, Jiang Zemin must give orders. Xin Ziling says that Hu Jintao “can not speak” to the military.
Xin also says that if Jiang Zemin had to play the same role over current leader Xi Jinping, how could Xi do something different? Because Xi has a princeling background, he dares to fight Jiang.
So, will Xu Caihou’s case extend to Jiang?
Cao Siyuan, former cadre of the central regime says that it depends on both sides’ strength and Xi’s determination.
Cao Xiyuan: “It is a contest of strength and determination. If the determination is there, then they will investigate further to root out who was the man behind (Xu Caihou). If there is not enough strength, it will go no further. We will see.”
Yu Meisun, former secretary of the state council says that Xu Caihou’s large interest groups must be purged, including those he promoted and those who paid him to be promoted.
Yu Meisun: “Online commentaries says that Xu was Jiang’s most favorite military man. How did Xu get promoted? His supporters certainly played an important role. The supporters promoted Xu, This is an interest group. Certainly it should be purged.”
Leng Jiepu, former dean of politics at People’s University of China says that recently, former French president Nicolas Sarkozy was arrested on accusation of corruption. China should learn from democratic Western countries.
Leng Jiepu: “For a democratic country, someone like Jiang Zemin has broken the law, they would still punish him.Such as Chen Shuibian in Taiwan, Sarkozy in France, they were presidents, werent they still sent to court? Jiang Zemin should be the same. If he really has problems, he should be treated the same as Sarkozy and Chen Shuibian. He should be sent to court and sentenced. There is no doubt.”
Another military “Tiger” Guo Boxiong’s scandals were also exposed. Guo the same as Xu Caihou, served as deputy chairman of the military commission. Guo was also Jiang Zemin’s confidant.
On July 6, netizens posted online news, exposing that during 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, Guo, without asking the military commission’s approval, personally set up military disaster relief headquarters in Chendu. He rejected top disaster relief leader,Wen Jiabao’s orders.
Guo and Xu were Jiang’s close allies in the military. Guo was in charge of the PLA “General Staff Department” and “General Armaments Department”. Xu was in charge of PLA “General Political Department” and “General Logistics Department”. They were both corrupt and taking bribes. Guo made a fortune from reselling armaments.
