Exiled June 4th Dissident Wu Renhua Returned to China:
Warned by National Security Police
Wu Renhua, June 4th dissident scholar, successfully passed
China’s Customs in Shanghai in November, 2012.
He went back to his hometown and visited his elderly mother
whom he hadn’t seen for 22 years.
Recently, Wu returned to the U.S. safely. However,
Wu disclosed that he was warned by the
national security police a few days after he got home.
Wu Renhua, 56-years old, has been in exile in the U.S. since
the June 4th Massacre.
During his time in the States, he’s been doing research
on the truth of the “June 4th” event.
On November 28, 2011, Wu Renhua, holding a U.S. passport,
successfully visited his hometown Cangnan, Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province.
Wu visited his aged mother and other family members.
After staying with his mother for 40 days at home,
Wu returned to Los Angeles on January 10, 2013.
Wu Renhua stated that he was extremely nervous when
he was going through customs in Pudong airport.
Wu Renhua: “When I went through the Customs,
the officials checked my picture, the system showed ‘wrong document’.
When they checked my English name,
the system also showed ‘wrong document’.
In the end, they asked me to provide my Chinese name,
and I gave them a fake Chinese name.
This sounds similar to my English name.
The system showed ‘wrong document’ once again.
At the time, I was extremely nervous.
However, finally they allowed me
to pass through Customs.”
In the interview with Hong Kong’s “Apple Daily”, Wu disclosed
that he didn’t bring a computer or cell phone with him.
He didn’t connect with the internet
or with any friends outside Wenzhou.
However, after a few days, he was warned by national security
police “there won’t be a next time for you” after he got home.
Nevertheless, it seemed that the police didn’t tail him publicly.
It’s the first time that Wu Renhuan has returned to
his hometown since his exile in the U.S..
In Wu’s tweet, he claimed that his return to China this time
was purely a personal trip, and was nothing to do with politics.
In order to visit China, not until last year did he forego
his refugee identity and adopt American nationality.
This being so he could use the American passport to
pass through Chinese Customs this year.
Wu Renhua thinks that China’s national security police
might be watching over him secretly.
Since he is holding an American passport, he wasn’t
treated in the same way as domestic dissents are.
Had it been otherwise, perhaps a diplomatic incident
might have been caused.
Fang Zheng, disabled in the “June 4th” Massacre:
“Congratulations to Wu Renhua for his successful visit to China!
It’s a good thing since it helped relieve his homesickness.”
Fang Zheng also stated that currently China’s
domestic dissidents are severely persecuted by the CCP for their ideals and beliefs.
Fang Zheng: ”Domestic dissidents are put into Jail and they
lose their freedom. Some of them have even lost their lives.
We are exiles abroad and what we lose is family affection.
Compared to domestic dissidents,
what we lose is relatively little.”
After Wu Renhua went back to the U.S., he posted a tweet
calling himself “an unworthy son”, and thanked his mother.
He wrote: “My mother doesn’t have any political
consciousness, and she doesn’t understand my beliefs.
She might not even understand how meaningful
what I’ve been doing is.
However, she has never interfered in my choice.
In order not to give me any pressure,
she swallows the sufferings of missing her son.
She never tells me how much she misses me.
She has never shed tears in front of me.”
Wu Renhua: “Both My mother and I are strong-willed and
we don’t usually express our feelings in words.
If we were not this strong-willed, we couldn’t
have survived the 22-year separation.
For most people, (separation) is a problem.
However, to me, it’s not a problem and I am going to continue working on what I should do.”
In addition, Wu Renhua initiated the activity of
“looking for June 4th Soldiers”.
In 2012, right before the anniversary of June 4th Massacre,
it was announced that nearly 3,000 soldiers’ names were collected, who participated
in the Massacre.
Not only were the names of those soldiers collected,
but their ranks, the troops they belonged to,
as well as the tasks they performed in the Massacre.
The information collected is regarded as the most
valuable historical material on the June 4th Massacre.
According to “Apple Daily”, the information collected has
made the CCP and its military authorities very panicky.
They are afraid of being nailed to the pillory of “historic disgrace”,
especially those military officers who are still in service.
The report from “Apple Daily” also stated that
some internet scoundrels, as instructed by the CCP,
attacked Wu Renhua, saying that Wu is inciting hatred.
Wu Renhua responded that his goal is not to incite
any hatred but to adhere to the truth and maintain justice.
