Who Is Behind Guo Meimei?
In 2011, a young girl named Guo Meimei repeatedly blew on
Weibo that she was ‘living in a big villa, and driving a
Maserati’.
Her posts and her identity as’commercial general manager of
the Red Cross Society of China’ have triggered
a great outcry of ‘Red Cross corruption’,
ruining the reputation of the Society
Since then, Guo Meimei continuously created news,
but got safely through.
Until recently, when she was arrested
for ‘online gambling on the World Cup.
People suspected her arrest was due to the fall
of her ‘big backer’.
Here is the report.
On July 9, Beijing police announced a crack down
on a criminal gang which organized illegal gambling
during the World Cup, and arrested 8 members.
The gang has accounts on offshore gambling sites,
and places bets through phone and instant messaging
software such as ‘WeChat’.
The police also arrested Guo Meimei who was gambling
on the spot based on their informers.
Guo Meimei admitted to police she had taken part in gambling.
In fact, Guo Meimei revealed she had watched and
gambled on the soccer matches several times since the
World Cup began.
Guo Meimei also posted comments online such as ‘Did not
have much sleep recently because of watching matches,
and still have to work’, ‘Feel sleepy!’
One netizen ‘jameschownb’ believes that arrests in China
are political needs and needs of the show.
Hence the recent arrest of Guo Meimei was not meant
to punish her corruption or show-off lifestyle,
but to influence the current direction of public opinion.
Many protests have occurred in China recently,
such as tens of thousands of people took to the streets to
oppose the construction of power plants in Shantou, Guangdong;
and people conducted self-immolation at the entrance of Henan
Province Higher People’s Court.
Netizen ‘jameschownb’ indicates Guo Meimei could have lost
her backing and become a sacrifice for the authorities to
divert public attention.
Netizen ‘jameschownb’: ‘It is likely that her backer was arrested.
Otherwise nobody would dare to arrest her
according to her previous records.
Her arrest now is surely that her backing has gone.’
In June 2011, the nobody Guo Meimei suddenly made a name
by boasting online of her luxury car worth more than 2 million.
and claimed herself a high authority in the ‘Red Cross
Society of China’.
Since then, Guo Meimei has made news that attracted public
attention.
She posted her sexy photos online, participated in Sanya
“Hainan Rendez Vous" to seduce the second generation
of the rich, spent 130,000 yuan on plastic surgery.
She also had an online war of words with Wong Tao,
CEO of ‘Zhonghong Boai Asset Management Limited’,
exposing each others’ scandals.
According to Wong Tao, Guo Meimei is the ‘girlfriend’ of
Wang Jun, the ex-director of ‘Zhonghong Boai’,
but Guo Meimei claimed that Wang Jun is her ‘godfather’.
The wealthy and well-connected Wong Tao was arrested
by Shenzhen police for taking drugs,
prior to that he had formally sued Guo Meimei.
In fact, netizens suspected Guo Meimei was
related to another ‘Wang Jun’, whose title as vice-chairman
of the Red Cross Society of China was removed in 2012.
He was also the former Deputy Minister of Finance.
Earlier this year, Hong Kong media revealed that Guo Meimei
and a mainland tycoon went to Macau to gamble together, and
the tycoon paid all the bills.
However, later she wanted to gamble on her own
and ran up gambling debts of HK $260 million.
The tycoon refused to pay the debts, and Guo was being
chased for debt repayment by the casino.
Later her ‘godfather’ helped her to pay the debt,
and she was able to temporarily get away with it.
Netizen Houxin believes that Guo Meimei’s arrest was meant
to catch the person behind her since her misdeeds
have been public for a very long time.
Netizen Houxin: ‘If she has 260 million dollars to gamble, then
the amount of her net worth should be close to this number.
Her gambling debt of 260 million dollars means the source
of her money is really suspicious.’
Netizen Lv Rongqian also states that Guo Meimei was always
very arrogant.
She may be involved in corruption in the ‘Red Cross Society’,
as well as power corruption of the ‘godfather’ who’s behind her.
Netizen Lv Qianrong:’It is so corrupt, with so many dark
and hidden stories involved.
Even the regime media, People’s Daily, stated that Guo Meimei
is only a small one. So who is the big one behind?’
From the photos Guo Meimei posted on Weibo,
netizens found out that Guo Changjiang, vice-chairman
of the Red Cross Society of China, had taken the same flight
as Guo Meimei.
